Potential Implications of SCAN Medical Transfer Devices for Maintaining Skin Integrity.

Medford, MA, December 3, 1998
By Richard Bohannon

Although the chief advantage of soft transfer aids, such as the EASYSLIDE and TURNSLIDE, is their ability to reduce the physical demands associated with assisted transfers, they may also be advantageous for reducing impairments of skin (integumentary) integrity.

There are three major reasons why this may be so: First, they make moving and transferring patients easier. Consequently, a patient may be repositioned more frequently resulting in a decrease in the duration of pressure on "at risk locations." Second, they are soft and can be placed under a patient without increasing the pressure on soft tissues like some rigid assistive devices do. Third, they allow movement of a patient with little or no shear. Since the patient moves with the device rather than on the device, skin threatening shear and friction can be minimized.
